Watch winder: noise, magnetization, placement… your questions
Share
Before choosing a watch winder, people often ask the same questions. Here are our answers.
Do watch winders make noise?
A quality watch winder is designed to be very quiet. Watches do not rotate continuously: they alternate between rotation and rest periods. If you want to install one in a bedroom, choose a model known for being quiet.
Can it magnetize my watch?
Watch winder motors are low-powered, and the watch is not in direct contact with them. The most common sources of magnetization in everyday life are speakers, tablets, or magnetic phone cases. If a watch suddenly starts gaining a lot of time, a watchmaker can check for magnetization and correct it quickly.
Will my watch wear out faster?
When properly set, a watch winder does not make the watch work any harder than it does on your wrist. Automatic watches also have a system that prevents the mainspring from being overwound. The key is to use the correct number of rotations per day: see our settings guide by brand.
Where should I place it?
- On a stable, level surface.
- Away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Away from speakers and magnetic devices.
- In a dressing room, office, or living room: it becomes a decorative object.
Can I leave a quartz watch in it?
There is no need: a quartz watch runs on a battery and does not need to be wound. It is better suited to a display case.
Should I leave my watch in it all the time?
It is not necessary, but that is the whole point if you alternate between several watches: each one stays on time and ready to wear.
